More a trivial fact than anything, but I don't usually learn a lot on Sunday - I'm usually pretty fried after a long weekend working. But today I learned something that I found a little surprising, and also a little cool.
Kole Sherwood is a rookie with the Columbus Blue Jackets, my second-favourite hockey team. He made his debut today for the Jackets, in Chicago, and in doing so became the first Columbus-born hockey player to don a CBJ jersey and play for Ohio's top hockey team.
Columbus have been in the league since a mini-expansion in 2000, when they joined alongside the Minnesota Wild. That's 18 seasons, and a lot of players - crazy that none have been Ohio born-and-bred.
What was also cool is that Sherwood has chosen to wear the number 88, which I found out was a homage to Patrick Kane - Sherwood's hockey idol and arguably the best American-born hockey player ever. Or at least he will be when he eventually hangs up the skates. For those who don't follow hockey, Kane plays for the Chicago Blackhawks - the very team Kole Sherwood got to face in his debut earlier today.
He played almost 7 minutes, and even got to match up against his idol for brief periods on a couple of shifts, which is pretty damn cool.
That's what I learned today.
